Primers and Coatings

In accordance with Steel Joist Institute (SJI) Section 3.3, the standard shop paint is a primer coat intended to protect the steel for only a short period of exposure in ordinary atmospheric conditions and shall be considered an impermanent and provisional coating.

The standard shop paint shall be as follows:

Long oil alkyd primer drying by oxidation. High solid content and fast dry. Conform to performance specifications as described in SSPC Paint Specification No 15 and 1-73a ICCA/AFPC & 2-75. Dry film thickness 1.0 mil minimum.

For additional cost, we can offer galvanizing, which significantly improves the corrosion resistance of the steel component for exposed locations. Joists that may be in any unconditioned space or exposed to any caustic or saline environments should be evaluated by the project designer for additional protection.
