Talkin' Turkey During Tough Times!

As tough economic times are forcing more and more people into food pantries and church halls to celebrate Thanksgiving, the Baltimore-based Swirnow family - along with their employees, sponsors, volunteers and over 60 non-profit organizations - will be distributing more than 21,000 turkey dinners to low income families, the unemployed, the disabled and the elderly.

The "Our Family to Your Family" program, launched in 1997 by Richard A. Swirnow, Developer of the Inner Harbor properties at HarborView, distributes traditional Thanksgiving dinners in the form of "Adopt A Turkey" gift baskets to participating non-profit organizations who ensure that the food reaches needy families. Each basket contains a 14-15 pound turkey, 5 pounds of potatoes, a can of green beans, cranberry sauce, gravy mix, dinner rolls and dessert.

"We're simply trying to do our part to support our community," notes David E. Swirnow, President of Swirnow Building Systems. "We call it 'From Our Family To Yours' and it provides all the traditional fixings to enable families to cook a feast and share Thanksgiving in their own homes. In the past, our program has reached some of the neediest residents of Baltimore and the surrounding area."

For the Greater Faith Baptist Church, one of the participants in last year's program, many homes that would not have been able to afford a home-cooked meal were able to enjoy a family tradition. And to the Community Assistance Network, the Adopt A Turkey Program has been a much needed resource for families in the Dundalk area.

Food distribution will take place on Saturday, November 22 at the Swirnow Building Systems warehouse, 2801 Sisson Street and at the HarborView Community on Key Highway from 12 noon to 2pm.

"Now more than ever we want to make sure that needy families have a hot nutritious meal for Thanksgiving," said David Swirnow . "We're thankful that we can continue to help."
